Let's Talk about Airton Cozzolino

From a very young age, Airton Cozzolino was thrust into the world of waves. He was born in 1994 in Ilha Do Sal, a small island of the Cabo Verde archipelago, in North West Africa, where the winds across the Atlantic makes for some top-notch surfing conditions which set him on a path to winning the Kitesurf World Championship.

Airton was four years old when he started skim boarding with some broken boards. At the age of six he used a body board for the first time and the following year he was inspired when some surfers left him their boards when leaving the island. Those boards gave Airton a chance to learn the art of surfing which he took with both hands and he spent the following years honing his craft.

In 2010, Airton was adopted by Italian businessman Libero Cozzolino, who’d moved from Italy to Africa to become a kitesurfing coach. This decision not only changed his life for the better, but also Airton’s. Today the father-and-son duo have two kite and surf schools, working in Capo Verde in the winter and in Chia, Sardinia, during the summer.

But Airton’s coaching work still takes a back seat to competing in some of surfing’s biggest events. His breakout year came along in 2011, when he won the Kitesurf World Championship in the wave riding category. Three years later he graduated to organize his own competition (Red Bull Unfastened) and he continued adding victories in the GWA Wave & Strapless Freestyle Tour, and reigned supreme in the Tarifa Strapless Kitesurfing Pro in 2016.

Airton scored others World Kitesurfing title in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and now he’s set his sights on becoming an all-round watermen by developing his skills in other surfing disciplines – watch out for him breaking new ground on a board soon.

Airton Cozzolino worked hard to become World Champion. And he still works every single day trying to make kitesurfing easier and enjoyable for everyone.
